In 1096 Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade to take Jerusalem and the Holy lands back while freeing the Eastern Christians from Islamic rule. At first it was suppose to be an appeal by Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus, so western mercenaries would fight the Seljuk Turks turned into a giant western migration and conquest of foreign territories. Both knights and peasants from many different countries traveled from one side of Europe to Jerusalem and captured it in the year 1099. That established the Kingdm of Jerusalem and other Crusader states.  The First Crusade was a major turning point in the expansion of Western power.
